Wysłany: Nie 11 Mar, 2007 9:40 pm   kilka zdań z Advanced Grammar...

Zerknijce prosze na to:

1. That must be the end of the first part of the performance. What happens/is happening now. Które byście wybrali? Klucz podaje "happens" i nie wiem dlaczego... co to oznacza?

2. Transformacja: I'm finding it really enjoyable to work here.

Klucz: I'm really enjoying working here. Dlaczego tak? Nie rozumiem. Dlaczego nie "I really enjoy..."

3. Transformacja: I take work home regularly because of my new responsibility at work.

Klucz: My new responsibility at work means I take work home regularly. Dlaczego? I dlaczego nie: ...means TAKING work home regularly. ?

4. Czy jest jakas roznica miedzy "I look forward to hearing from you" a "I'm looking forward to hearing from you" ?

5. Czy to zdanie jest ok: Are you hearing from Wendy these days? Klucz mowi, ze jest bledne i podaje: Do you hear... A ja nie mam pojecia dlaczego.

6. Czy mozna powiedziec "I'm suspecting (np. her)" ? i czym to sie rozni od "I suspect (np. her)

dzieki!

pozdrawiam[/b]

Think of it as a series of events or actions you complete as you speak, e.g. I take the key off the hook, I put it in the lock and I turn it twice to the right. In your example, the first part is over and now people have coffee, straighten their legs, chat or do whatever they may desire in anticipation of the second part.
This is used a lot when giving instructions or in commentaries.

I imagine the point of this particular transformation is to show that you know that enjoy is followed by gerunds and not by to-infinitives. The tense is of no transformative concern here and should thus stay the same, namely the present progressive.

Using take makes me understand you're already doing this job. If you were to say that it involves taking work home, I'd assume you're describing your future/potential responsibility.

No real difference.

Unlike the verb see which can be used in both the progressive/dynamic (I'm seeing the doctor tomorrow) and the non-progressive/stative meaning (I see what you mean), hear is not normally used in the progressive form.
To give an idea of the present moment, BrE turns to can hear (I can hear somebody outside), while AmE goes simply with I hear somebody oustide.

No, you can't say that. Suspect has a stative (not dynamic) meaning only and so is not usually used in the progressive form. Some other verbs from this group are believe, understand, want, imagine, know, wish, forget, hear etc.
The difference between the non-progressive/stative and progressive/dynamic meanings is as in the example above (I'm seeing = visiting vs. I see = understand).

"I look forward..." is formal, "I'm looking forward..." is informal

I'd rather say "I look froward..." is more formal than "I'm looking forward."

Actually, the register has nothing to do with it! The difference is how the speaker perceives their own words:
an action seen as a whole/accomplished (I look forward...) or continuing (I am looking...).

Unless very self-aware or possibly an English teacher :) , an ordinary native speaker will be unable to explain their choice or the difference between a mental impression (I look forward) and a mental activity (I'm looking forward). In such cases, attempting to explain these subtleties to your students may prove counterproductive, unless of course they're advanced enough to handle it.
It is my policy, that until then they're perfectly fine knowing there is no real difference there.

For this and similarly riveting aspects of the English verb, consult RA Close's A Teachers' Grammar or pretty much any book by M. Lewis.
