Zawsze mialam problem z takimi zdaniami:
In my living room there is (/are) (a) sofa, (a) TV, (a) bookshelf and (an) armchair.
Jak bedzie poprawnie?
Wymieniajac przedmioty dajemu liczbe pojedyncza czasownika czy mnoga?
Spotkalam sie kiedts ze stwierdzeniem ze doasowujemy to do pierwszego wymienianego przedmiotu. Ale,czy to racja?
Rowniez zlyszalam ze wymieniajac dajemy przedimek tylko przed pierwszym wyrazem. Brzmi rozsadnie,ale czy aby?..

In my room there is a sofa. -> This is singular, which means you need an article, either definite or indefinite.

In my room there are sofas. -> This is plural, which means you can't use indefinite article. You could use definite article but thta depends on context.

I agree with what you've heard. I would concord the verb form to the first noun after it. I'd never say "In my living room there are a sofa, two armchairs and a bookshelf." or "In my living room there is two sofas [actually this is what you're likely to hear from a native speaker, but it's of course ungrammatical], an armchair and two TV sets.". On the other hand, "In my living room there are two sofas, an armchair and a bookshelf." is perfectly acceptable as far as I'm concerned.

As for articles, according to what I was taught you precede every noun with an article unless they constitute a pair. And thus, "I live with a man and woman.", but "I live with a cook and an actress.". Something like that.

There is a storage cubbyhole under the stairs. The kitchen has a fridge, four burner stove, oven, sink and cupboards. The second floor has two bedrooms and a shared bathroom with tub/shower. The third floor also has two bedrooms; each with outside balcony. The bathroom features a corner shower. Each privately locking bedroom has a single sized "captain's bed" with 3 storage drawers underneath, desk, chair and small bookshelf, easy chair, lamp, closet with storage shelf.
