I have checked and let me boast about the fact I know the words. What about you? Nadine, as a titbit, I can tell you that Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary lists 3000 words that are essential to communicate in English. I recommend it :)

I don't find any lists of words very useful. There are nouns as well as articles, conjunctions and so on. How should I use a list where I can find words such as: a, the, of, by, at and suchlike. It would be better if the words were classified by categories.

barteks2, it is just a list of 850, say, the most common, words which everyone who wants to speak English well should know. What categories would you classify them by?

Let me ask you, what's the purpose of creating such lists beyond statistics? You read this list and you encounter word 'come'. You think: "well, this is the most often used word, fortunately I already know it. Great. Does it mean I have to use it more often?" Just kidding :D I'm not malicious, but it's useless in learning English. It's only my humble opinion :)

barteks2, please, do not forget about people who have only started learning English. To most people on the forum, such list is, like you said, just a simple statistic, and so is to me. Nevertheless, there are people who may find this simple statistic really useful. Do you agree? :)

For instance, Oxford 3000 lists some words that I did not know before. Having got to know them is quite useful to me. After all, this list hasn't been created by some greenhorns. It's been created by people who definitely know the ropes.

By no means, but knowing the word come is a good indication since we started learning English quite some time ago.

Oxford napisał/a:
The keywords of the Oxford 3000 have been carefully selected by a group of language experts and experienced teachers as the words which should receive priority in vocabulary study because of their importance and usefulness.

This is what I like :)

Actually I found the list in the paper dictionary. As for the list on the Interner, Rudzia's explained everything. :)
