Czas przeszły ciągły, inaczej Past Continuous albo Past Progressive, służy do wyrażania czynności przeszłych, które były w toku, trwały, w pewnym określonym punkcie czasu w przeszłości. Podobnie jak Present Continuous mówi o tym, co dzieje się w danej chwili teraz, tak Past Continuous opowiada o tym, co działo się w danej chwili kiedyś.
Na przykład jeśli zacząłem grać w szachy o 7.00 i grałem przez 2 godziny, to o 8 byłem w trakcie gry:
I was playing chess at 8 o'clock. I started at 7 and finished at 9.

Podobnie jak wszystkie inne czasy ciągłe budujemy ten czas używając odpowiedniej formy czasownika TO BE i czasownika z końcówką -ing:

ja śpiewałem - I was singing
ty śpiewałeś - you were singing
on śpiewał - he was singing
ona śpiewała - she was singing
ono śpiewało - it was singing
my śpiewaliśmy/śpiewałyśmy - we were singing
wy śpiewaliście/śpiewałyście - you were singing
oni śpiewali/one śpiewały - they were singing

Pytania tworzymy przez inwersję, czyli odwrócenie szyku (podobnie jak wszystkie pytania z czasownikiem TO BE):

czy ja śpiewałem - was I singing?
czy ty śpiewałeś - were you singing?
itd
Przeczenia robimy tak, jak zawsze przeczenia z czasownikiem TO BE, a więc dodając NOT:

ja nie śpiewałem - I was not singing - I wasn't singing
ty nie śpiewałeś - you were not singing - you weren't singing
itd
Ze zdania w czasie Past Continuous nie wynika w ogóle, czy czynność o której mowa skończyła się, czy nie.

Despite the fact that the tense appears so very straighforward, there seems to be a lot of confusion about it. I don't know if you've noticed that about your students, too, but I see a lot of them here tend to overuse the past progressive. Same goes for its present equivalent, but b/c we use it more often anyway, I guess the abuse is less noticeable.

To give you an example, I'll have a kid telling me about his or her weekend, or whatever. And they'll often start off with
'I was helping my mom (ok, not too many of those kids out there, but it's just an example

), and I was tidying my room and I was talking to my brother etc' and you know what - all I'm doing is waiting for them to tell me .. ok, BUT WHAT HAPPENED THEN?? I am waiting for the past simple to cut in.

That is what the past progressive is predominantly about, isn't it? The background.

As far as your kids are concerned, perhaps they are trying to avoid learning irregular verbs? ;-)

I know some that will try avoiding just about anything as far as learning goes :kijemgo:

Here, though, I believe the problem is rooted in the L1.

- Co robiłeś w weekend? (częściej niż: co zrobiłeś)
- Pomagałem matce, sprzątałem pokój, rozmawiałem z bratem.. (cześciej niż: pomogłem, posprzątałem, porozmawiałem - naturalnie wynika to bezpośrednio z pytania)

Somehow the bracketed translates in their heads as the past simple, whereas the from they're more likely to use comes out as the past progressive. All in all, very incorrect.
