Review about ,,Ogniem i Mieczem’’

‘Ogniem i Mieczem’ is a film based on a book written by Henryk Sienkiewicz, the famous, 19th century writer. The film was directed by Jerzy Hoffman and released in 1999. At the time, it was the most expensive Polish film ever made. The title in english translation means ‘With Fire and Sword’. It is a historical fiction film, set in the 17th century in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the Khmelnytsky Uprising. The film has many heroes and plots.
The first plot is about love between Jan Skrzetuski, polish warrior and Hlena Kurecwiczówna, beautiful polish noblewoman. Bohun, Cossack warrior want to disturb them, because he loves Helena too. He kidnaps her and keep her imprisoned. At this time Jan is in a war against Khmelnytsky Uprising and he will find out about that later.
The second plot I about a war between Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Cossacks. It is the true, historical and internal conlict. The film presents the three battles between that sides and a siege of Zbaraż, polish stronghold. We can see the true and chronological course of events.
In no way can I criticise this film, because it is great. Although it has one defect, too little scenes of battle. Actors and actress are the best especially Michał Żebrowski who plays Jan Skrzetuski. They have the brilliant and proffesional clothes and a music is really good.
In conclusion I can recommend this film for every kind of spectator. Not only should the fans of history watch it but the normal fans of cinema can do it too.
